Patrick had finished apologising. Lee had slunk back into the kitchen in partial disgrace—though it sounded like he was chuckling as he went—and Karel had accepted the offer of free coffee for at least a century, as compensation.

“It’s okay,” he said, for what felt like the hundredth time. “It’s actually very amusing as a double entendre.”

“Or a treble,” Patrick said glumly. He was on his second consolation coffee in the same time it had taken Karel to drink one. “But whatever the… er… sleeping arrangements, you do seem to have found something special there.”

“Yes. Yes, I have.”

“Have you moved in to their place yet?”

“I will. Soon.” He’d been thinking he would surrender his flat when the lease came up in a couple of months’ time. His landlord had already said he’d be happy to extend the tenancy, but Karel had asked for time to think about it. Leroy and Griff welcomed him enthusiastically every time he stayed and never asked for his whereabouts at other times, but he could also see their disappointment if he didn’t go to theirs of an evening.

“It would make more sense than me trying to keep up the place in Wandsworth when I spend most nights at their place. And we all get on together so well.”

“Even with… three of you? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—”

“No, it’s fine. I know it’s not usual. But it works for me. For us. That’s not to say there aren’t compromises to be made.” And he didn’t mean the fight for the bathroom in the mornings, or who was going to hoover, or the ultimate battle for control of the remote. He could see that other people would baulk at the effort of always considering two other points of view, two other’s emotional needs, two other calls for attention. Yet Karel felt his shoulders were broad enough to cope—in fact, the three-way dynamic excited him in a way that no other relationship ever had.

“Each to his own.” Patrick looked momentarily weary. “I’m doing my best to cope with one lively man, let alone two. Have you lived with someone before?”

Karel shook his head. There had been boyfriends in his life, but none of them had ever been anywhere near an official, live-in partner.

Patrick grinned. “Plenty to get used to, then.”

“What are you talking about?” Lee slid into a chair at the table, obviously considering he was forgiven for any earlier faux pas.

“The trials of living with someone,” Patrick said, the light in his eyes belying his stern words.

“It’s marvellous!” Lee said excitedly. “Gives you the chance to know someone properly. To relax with them. To concentrate on what they’re really like, what their core values are, how much or how little the daily things matter. You can both laugh at jokes, complain at hurts, rant over disappointments. Plan the days ahead, share the days gone past. Build a life together, rather than as separate individuals. To me, it’s having a best friend, a life mate, and a lover, all in one.
